Worth the Hype? Tarte Shape Tape
Tarte Shape Tape has swept through YouTube and every. single. blog. Is it worth the hype? I’ll be honest about my trying to get this damn thing in my possession. Every Ulta near us did not have the shade that I needed. I needed light neutral. They had every other color in stock except for that one. They didn’t even have a tester. Wat. So, finally, I happened to get lucky and get the last one available.
Now that I have it, how awesome is it??
I like it. I really do.
This concealer is PETA-certified cruelty-free and vegan, if that’s something that you prioritize. It also comes in 14 shades, at a cost of $25. It is also only available at Ulta. Ulta has exclusive rights to the Double Duty Beauty line from Tarte, making the long ass name of this thing Tarte Double Duty Beauty Shape Tape Contour Concealer. If we’re just going by the title, it becomes clear that Tarte really wants this to be both a cream contour as well as a concealer. IF you watch a lot of YouTube, you know that a lot of makeup artists will use concealer as a highlighter or contour in videos. If we’re feeling particularly real about this, that looks amazing in videos with good lighting and HD cameras. It looks awful in person. That was my main concern when I opened this bad boy up. What if it looked like a hot mess in person?
After testing and testing and testing this, I can tell you that it’s best to use it sparingly. The way that they cake it on in videos is a no go in real life. It is very hydrating, not drying, but is very full coverage. Because of this, I also don’t think that I would really want to use this a contour shade. It would be very easy to look cakey. Most of the deep shades are also fairly warm-toned, so I don’t think that that’s always a great option for contouring either. If you’re going to go down the heavy-highlight-contour route, I think there are much better products to use than this, and it should stay firmly in the concealer category.
Some other bad stuff? The wand on this thing is GIANT. As I said before, important to use less of this. Apply sparingly and build up, not putting a ton on at once. With the giant wand, this is really had to do.
The verdict today is that this is totally worth the hype as a concealer, but not as a contour. The next time you’re in Ulta, definitely try it out – if it’s in stock!
