Montana Fair

I’m almost out of adventures to talk about, so this playing catch up is nearly over. A couple weeks ago, Mom and I went to the Montana Fair. It’s not the largest fair on the state, or even the best one, but it’s the one that’s in my town. I hadn’t been to a real fair in probably a decade. My province in Canada has kind of a cheap imitation, but it’s not the same.

The fair is a mix of sights, sounds, and smells. This one really doesn’t hold a candle to the fairs of the Midwest, like in Iowa and Minnesota. We took a walk though the halls of show animals. This ranged from 8 year old 4H kids who had rabbits and fancy kinds of chickens to professional ranchers with huge bulls with gleaming rings in their noses. My favourite was definitely the petting zoo. They had tiny baby pygmy goats, lambs, calves, ponies...the kinds of things kids (and Caitlins) love to touch.

We also rode the rides. For one reason or another, my stomach is not what it used to be, and the tilt-o-whirl killed me. We ended up on the merry-go-round to try to settle down, but I don’t think it helped a whole bunch.

Another big plus to the fair is the food. Funnel cakes are probably my favourite thing in the entire world and it is so hard to find them outside of the fair. All of the ones that I have found that are not at the fair were also not made fresh, which just isn’t right.

There was also an abundance of meats on sticks. You name it, they can put it on a stick for you. There was even some guy walking around chewing on a whole turkey leg. I played it safe with some barbecue chicken. Not sketchy at all.

It sounds so hillbilly, but I love this place. It’s what it feels like to be American. They’ve got pie eating contests, and awards for the best jam. It’s what things should be like.

Do you go to a fair near you?
